Women of Concrete

On the spidertangle listserv, Nico Vassilakis wondered why there hasn't been an anthology of women visual/concrete poets. My reply:

Always an interesting question with few answers to date.

SCORE used to ask when women concreters/visual poets were few and far between -- and we sought 'em out, vigorously, working with Liz Was, Kathy Ernst, Marilyn Rosenberg, Carol Stetser, Ruth Wolf-Rehfeldt (Germany), Rea Nikonova (Russia), Carla Bertola (Italy), Johanna Drucker, Ana Hatherly (Portugal), Celestine Frost, Nancy Brush-Burr, Susan Smith-Nash and others over the years -- why so few? They were by far less of a minority in the mailart sphere we overlapped.

What's up? Is there something inherent in the approach to the page that deflects women? Has there been something in the way the editors and organizers of concrete/viz po mags/exhibitions handle their venues that shut out/down/up women?

Maybe, just maybe, such an anthology could be in the germination stages. We're brainstorming women of concrete, women of visual, of all countries. We have at first blush these poets:
