Teacher Observation

I am appalled that most students can ghost through a day and never ask one question of their teachers, of their peers, of themselves. I am appalled that most American citizens can crawl through their daily lives and never ask a question of their local, state or national government, never ask a question that gains them more understanding of the world around them. I’m astounded that so few people realize that to ask questions is the first small step to knowledge that matters, to enacting change. Who doesn’t desire change?

I am bewildered that most of us do not interrogate the culture we are immersed in, poking and prodding it, pushing, nudging, holding our culture–its institutions, its media and entertainment industry–accountable, never taking anything for granted. I am saddened to think that one trait that makes us more human than animal–the drive to investigate, to search out different ways of thinking about things near and far, different ways of doing things, seems to be withering away.

I’m compelled to ask: At what age is our inherent curiosity squelched? When do we decide to accept everything someone tells us? Or, if we don’t accept what we’re told, why are we satisfied to only mumble our dissatisfaction under our breath? When do we seize our day?
