Now flarf This

 

I can’t read flarf as new.

I can’t read flarf as anything to capitalize.

I can’t read flarf manifestos. I’ve read more flarf manifestos than I should have.

I love the creation story of flarf, similarly conceived by at least one high school literary magazine staff I know of. I impatiently await the death of flarf.

I love some flarf poems (I laugh in my love, I lose myself in laughter, wonder why flarf poets don’t become flarf stand-up comics, wonder why anyone would want to be identified as flarf anything, but then that’s the flarf of it).

I hate some flarf poems, process worn thin on poem's chest like a worn plastic convention badge.

I rue the distraction. I love the distractions, dialogues, diatribes. I hate the Sisyphysean debates.

I resent the short-sightedness, the claims of originality for 50 year old cut-up techniques.

I love the brashness.

I hate the exclusiveness: we did this first and foremost.

I love the inclusiveness: anyone can do this. Even the aforementioned high school literary magazine staff. Even my eight year old cat.

I love the movement even if it doesn’t ultimately move.

I’ll love what it meant even when I no longer read what it means.

For an exceptional summer, as exceptional are the contributors to this issue, an issue that concludes The Four Seasons, one poem after another to honor Antonio Vivaldi. Today, on the commemoration of his death on July 28, 1741, I felt I had to send out this announcement and I rushed to put together an Editorial. Only while writing these words, I realized it is July 28. Things happen above and below. I am therefore paying my reverence to the Maestro of the Conservatorio dell’Ospedale della Pietà to thank him for his music.

Last week, I received a 13 page letter from Emma S. (though there’s much to love about e-mail, Facebook, and listserves, I miss these bulging envelopes). She described her experience as part of the personnel at an attempted blockade of clear cutting operations in southern Oregon.

 

I honor those who  people these picket lines. I’ve not been one of them. As father and public school teacher for 18 years, I’ve carefully weighed the consequences of such actions. Could my potential arrest compromise my family and my position as a "state" employee be counter-balanced by substantive changes in logging practices (and/or other environmental malpractices too numerous to name)? Can I improve my life and the lives of my family through these kinds of efforts?

 

Such local actions that Emma took part in are not–never–futile. They’re fodder, breath, blood, body, energy toward global movements. I now focus my activity on two fronts: art and education (which are one in so many ways). As an artist, speak large, loud, shout universal, toward sustainability. As an educator, point other educators toward sustainable actions, toward teaching humankind of all ages to think about humankind of future ages.

A Question for You from nieuwland jeroen

 

Dear everyone,
 

I've had some discussions recently following from a remark by a friend that the distinction between
visual art and poetry is reactionary, similarly to the hard and fast distinction that used to be made between sculpure and painting.

Personally I can't help but thinking that even though often the distinction is blurred, there remains an essential difference between the two; namely, that visual art might, but need not use language, but for poetry, however widely understood, language is an essential ingredient.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

Troubadors Michael Rothenberg & David Meltzer Coming to a Town Near You (maybe)

Please check out the new ROCKPILE Website & Blog at Big Bridge, www.bigbridge.org/rockpile/

ROCKPILE is a collaboration between David Meltzer - poet, musician, essayist, and more - and Michael Rothenberg of Big Bridge Press. David and Michael will journey through eight cities in the U.S. to perform poetry and prose, composed while on the road, with local musicians and artists in each city. ROCKPILE will serve to educate and preserve as well as to create a history of collaboration. It will help to reinforce the tradition of the troubadour of all generations, central to the cultural upheaval and identity politics that reawakened poets, artists, musicians, and songwriters in the mid-1960s through the 1970s. The project will end with a final multimedia performance celebration in San Francisco.

The ROCKPILE Website & Blog will tell you all you need to know about the ROCKPILE project including performance dates, venues, artist bios and performance clips of some of the musicians we will be meeting and performing with in each of the cities.
