Here is some great work by a Judith Copithorne, a Canadian writer who has been creating visual poetry since the 60s. The work is vibrant and fresh while clearly reflecting past traditions of concrete poetry.

Just back from southwest/central B.C. myself. Caught a couple vispo pieces from Copithorne in an anthology of B.C. poetry on the shelves of Otter Books in Nelson. Also snapped up a 1971 book by earle birney, rag & boneshop, with concrete poetry, in a tiny Kaslo bookstore. I was on a hunt for Robin Blaser but was casting a wide net (a couple of books by George Bowering I should have snapped up).

Zombies Have Arrived

Not only can they spell at least one name (Tom B.), they apparently can walk slowly really fast. Read here. Did anyone see them between Moscow Idaho and Ohio Kent?  I assume they moved in a straight line. Reports will be appreciated.

About the same time the zombies entered the Beckett domicile, I received a book by Mike Basinski with this poem:

Strange Noises in the Night

Hot again, still, but now also quite smoky (we can get smoke blown in from forest fires a hundred miles away), so I may be just a bit addled.

Heard scratching noises in the dark last night. This is what I found:

The zombies were droning on and on in disagreement:

    Zombies do not

    stiffen to attention.

 

    They are pre-stiffened,

    always-already stiffened.

Then I found out zombies could spell:

Right before I passed out, I heard them mumbling, "Ohio Kent, Ohio Kent, Ohio, Ohio" as they headed east out the door. They sounded like a bunch of academics.

Saw it hugging that large lithographed butterfly without speech, that thinking against the wall. Tried to pull it off with sensory data, woke up with applause, first words translated into a vain attempt. Snow was lighter than chaff. But in return for being underwing, not buried in questions of money, I fancied profits on a piece of rock or log. Her form was the waiting for. The lee side of a haystack in mantles of white. I have to get some.
