Performing concurrently and in the round, poets Nico Vassilakis, James Yeary, Lisa Radon, and
David Abel will read work devised, arranged, and/or repurposed in response to the strategies and character of the installation.
About the Installation
At Owner's Risk, Avantika Bawa’s first show in Seattle, is a site-responsive installation addressing the current structure and function of Suyama Space as an architectural firm and gallery, while also reflecting on its early history as an auto body shop and livery stable. By applying simple design principles, seemingly obvious materials and colors are repurposed to create a platform in which the past and present collide.
At Owner's Risk will be on view through August 10.
Regular gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm; admission is free
About the Performers
David Abel is a poet, editor, teacher, bookseller, and curator. Three new books are hot off the press: Float, a collection of collage texts from Chax Press; Tether, a chapbook of poems from Barebone books; and Carrier, a chapbook of visual pieces from c_L Books. He is a founding member of
the Spare Room reading series, a Research Fellow of the Center for Art + Environment of the Nevada Museum of Art, and a member of the Portland artists' and writers' collective 13 Hats.
Lisa Radon writes about art and makes art about writing. Her essays, reviews, and profiles have been published in Drain, Oregon Humanities, Portland Monthly, Surface Design Journal, SHIFT (Japan), FLAUNT (LA), Hyperallergic (NY), and art ltd., and recent catalog essays include those for Leonie Guyer's "Constellations No. 1-7" at the lumber room and "The Quadratic Logogram of Almost Everything" at Half/Dozen. She makes text-based art, poems, word-sound performances, and collaborative, durational writing projects.
Nico Vassilakis is a multimedia artist, poet, and writer, and was a founder and curator of the long-running Subtext Reading Series in Seattle. His visual poetry videos have been shown at festivals and exhibitions, and can be seen online at staringpoetics.weebly.com. His latest publications are TEXT LOSES TIME, staReduction, Disparate Magnets, Protracted Type, and West of Dodge. With Crag Hill he edited The Last Vispo Anthology: 1998-2008, forthcoming from Fantagraphics Books.
James Yeary publishes the psychogeographic serial my day with visual artist Nate Orton, undermining the immediate and the everyday with peripatetic introspective valencies to the outside world. His publishing imprint c_L recently issued the chapbook Carrier by David Abel. Occasional commentary on the literary underbelly can be discovered at catabolicguiltcalendar.blogspot.com.
