Um, where's the land?

I sweated through three t-shirts today

It was a good day

Mosquito Swarm

Many thousand pulsing lights

push us into feverish delight

gyrating together in circles.

Extravagant feasts

long hours of lust

a paroxysm of shrill noise

we recoil in desire for the dead.

Sinking empire

gold-laden thrones suddenly disappearing

legends destroyed

who has never known such ecstatic dancing?

Who are my brothers?

People poor near and far

Who are you in stars?

Comfort is your dream

 

Who are you, wordless

in pale starved nights?

Thin hands, suffering

Sailors sans stars, hope

 

Travelers holding together?

Give me back my welcome

Women of Ravenna wear

deep gazes and delicate gestures

carrying knowledge of days

of ancient cities and festivals

 

Women of Ravenna cry

like stifled children: guttural

yet when they laugh

light seems to shine

 

Women of Ravenna pray

like children: gentle, satisfied

They speak words of love

yet not know they lie

 

Women of Ravenna kiss

deep and rare and devout

yet all they know of living

is that we all must die

a little dead city

its churches in ruins

You can read about it in books

 

You visit it and take it in

Streets murky and wet

dumb for a thousand years

Over all grows moss and grass

 

That's how old songs are

You hear them and never smile

Everyone listening and thinking

Long after they fall into the night
